Iran's Ambassador to the UN, in a letter to "Antonio Guterres," the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council on Friday, condemned the recent military actions and attacks by the United States, stating: I express the Islamic Republic of Iran's strongest condemnation of the aggressive military actions carried out by the United States armed forces against two Iranian oil tankers near the port of Jask and the Strait of Hormuz, as well as the attacks against several points on Iran's coastal areas overlooking the Strait of Hormuz, in the final hours of May 7, 2026.
Iravani emphasized: These aggressive and provocative actions, which the President of the United States has explicitly acknowledged, constitute a clear violation of the April 8, 2026 ceasefire and a flagrant breach of Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter.
The Permanent Representative of Iran to the UN stated: The United States has also continued its internationally wrongful acts by imposing a so-called naval blockade, launching repeated attacks against Iranian merchant vessels and their illegal seizure, and holding their crews hostage.
He stressed: Such illegal actions are tantamount to piracy, violate international law and the UN Charter, and, according to Article 3(c) of UN General Assembly Resolution 3314 of December 14, 1974, constitute an act of aggression. Iran's Ambassador to the UN added: The illegal actions of the United States represent a serious and dangerous escalation that destabilizes an already fragile region and poses a serious threat to international peace and security.
Iravani said: Such behavior is entirely inconsistent with the responsibilities of a permanent member of the Security Council that claims commitment to freedom of navigation. These actions, instead of safeguarding maritime security, undermine it and violate the fundamental principles of international law. He emphasized: At a time when restraint, diplomacy, and dialogue are urgently and imperatively needed, the continuation of military escalation by the United States sends a clear message that the country advocates for coercion and militarism instead of peaceful dispute resolution.
Iran's Ambassador to the UN warned: The consequences of the United States' continued military actions in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz could be catastrophic, extending far beyond the region and undermining international peace and security; a matter for which the United States will bear full responsibility.
In his letter to the UN Secretary-General and the President of the Security Council, Iravani stated: Therefore, the Islamic Republic of Iran, while emphasizing its inherent right to self-defense in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter, as well as its right to take all necessary measures to protect and safeguard its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security, calls on the Secretary-General and the Security Council to explicitly and unequivocally condemn the illegal actions of the United States, including the naval blockade against the Islamic Republic of Iran, and to demand that the United States abide by its obligations under international law and refrain from any further provocative actions.
