In a post on his official X account on Sunday, Baghaei pointed out a stark contradiction between the EU's current stance and its own foundational legislation. He noted that under EU law, the bloc does not recognize the extraterritorial application of third-country laws—such as U.S. sanctions—and considers them contrary to international law.
"The EU Blocking Statute expressly prohibits EU operators from complying with any requirement based on specified foreign statutes," Baghaei wrote. "How, then, can the Union now support the most predatory and unlawful unilateral coercive measures against Iran?"
The Iranian spokesperson contrasted the EU's current position with its actions in 1996, when the bloc acted independently to defend its sovereignty against a U.S. sanctions regime by adopting the Blocking Statute. "Today it has become an accessory to Washington’s lawless conduct," he asserted.
Baghaei warned that the EU’s endorsement of the U.S. economic war constitutes a grave violation of international law, stressing that every EU member state will be held accountable for the consequences of contributing to this wrongful act.
Concluding his remarks, the diplomat dismissed the EU's dual approach, stating that the bloc cannot endorse U.S. "economic terrorism" against Iran while simultaneously claiming to seek de-escalation and regional stability. He labeled the EU's stance as "mutually exclusive," citing it as clear evidence of the Union's "moral decay and political incompetence."
