The demonstration followed a failed coup attempt in Niger last week, which resulted in the deaths of several military personnel. The protesters vowed to continue defending the country against the attempts by Western imperialist powers to undermine Niger’s sovereignty.
Speaking at the demonstration on Saturday, Omar Salifou, one of the leading activists in Niger said, "the imperialists whom we expelled from our country are the ones trying to destabilize us,” Salifou said, calling on Nigeriens to remain united in defending their country.
Idrissa Adamou, a leader of the youth movement Des Jeunes, also called on the member states of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso — to learn a lesson from a coup attempt orchestrated by France.
Still, Aïcha Faran Maiga, a prominent figure in the Préfète organization, paid tribute to the Nigerien soldiers who lost their lives while defending the country during the failed coup attempt.
She said Niger had already freed itself from Western domination and would, God willing, never return to the era of Western oppression.
The failed coup attempt came as Nigeriens were marking three years since the country’s military government expelled French and American forces from the country.
The withdrawal of Western troops followed the July 2023 military coup that ousted former President Mohamed Bazoum and brought General Abdourahamane Tchiani to power as the head of Niger’s military government.
