Iran's First Vice President, Es'haq Jahangiri, has said Iran is keen to join the Shanghai Cooperation Organization due to the importance of this Asian Organization.

Iran Press/Asia: Talking to reporters and journalists on his arrival in Tashkent, Jahangiri said: "The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is one of the most important organizations formed in Asia with important members such as Russia and China, and India and Pakistan which have recently been accepted as key members."

Iran's First Vice President arrived at Tashkent's Islam Karim International Airport before noon. He was greeted by Uzbekistan's Deputy Prime Minister, Aziz Abdulhakimov, Deputy Foreign Minister of Uzbekistan, the mayor of Tashkent and the ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Uzbekistan, Iran Press reported.

While stressing that Iran is also interested in joining this organization, First Vice President Jahangiri noted: "The Shanghai Cooperation Organization has a great potentiality for economic, political and security cooperation, and its member states can expand their partnership on those grounds."

Jahangiri while emphasizing that it is possible to solve international and global governance issues through multilateralism, asserted "in facing the unilateralism that the US government today champions, we can reinforce multilateralism through strengthening regional organizations, and multilateralism is the approach that the world must take."

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is an intergovernmental organization established in 2001 by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan for multilateral security, economic and cultural cooperation. Various countries have observer status within the organization such as the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mongolia, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Belarus.
