Iraqi political and media figures in Najaf province condemned the illegal detention of Press TV journalist by America.

Iran Press/Middle East: Iraqi journalist also protesting the limitations in the detention center for Marzieh Hashemi and called for her unconditional release.

According to Iran Press, head of the journalists' Union of Najaf, Ayad Aljabouri said that the Hashemi's detention revealed the US lies about the press freedom in the country.

The lawyers in Mosul in the northern province of Nineveh also condemned the without charge detention of Marzieh Hashemi by the US officials and said the action is a clear violation of international law.

The 59-year-old US citizen, who is based in Iran, was detained on Sunday in St. Louis, Missouri, where she had filmed a Black Lives Matter documentary.

On January 20, Iranian media activists, students, and women staged a protest out of the Swiss embassy in Tehran to condemn Press TV Hashemi's detention.

A court in the United States has confirmed the arrest of US-born Iranian Press TV news presenter Marzieh Hashemi as a material witness in an unspecified investigation.

She was detained as a 'material witness' to a criminal case and no charges were pressed against her, according to Hossein Hashemi, her elder son.

The US law defines a material witness as a person who is presumed to have information about the subject matter of a lawsuit or criminal prosecution, which is critical to the outcome of the case or trial.  103/207
