Marzieh Hashemi, the Press TV anchorwoman who has been detained by the FBI in the United States, is to appear before a grand jury on Wednesday.

Iran Press/America: "On Wednesday, a 23-member jury will be making a decision about my mother," Hashemi's son, Hussein, told the Young Journalists' Club.

According to Iran Press, she is expected to be freed if the grand jury votes that there is not enough evidence to hold her.

Under US law, a grand jury has the power to conduct legal proceedings and investigate potential criminal conduct, and determine whether criminal charges should be brought.

After days of silence, the US government confirmed on Friday that it was holding Hashemi in jail as a 'material witness', and that she would be released after she testified before a grand jury.

Iran summoned the Swiss ambassador in Tehran, which represents American interests, on Tuesday to protest over Marzie Hashemi's detention in America.

Hashemi, 59, was arrested on Jan. 13 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation at St. Louis Lambert International Airport while she was in the US to visit her ill brother and other family members. 101/213
