Iran Press/Middle East: Michel Aoun has asked the cabinet to continue in a caretaker role until a new government is formed, Lebanese presidential office confirmed on Wednesday.
Under the constitution, Hariri’s cabinet would stay on in a caretaker role until a new government is formed. The president must begin parliamentary consultations to name a new prime minister.
Meanwhile, the Lebanese army issued a directive urging protesters to vacate major thoroughfares in Beirut to allow life to return to normal in the Lebanese capital, Al-Manar television channel reported.
Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Hariri submitted his resignation. Hariri's decision came on the back of 13 days of mass protests.
“I have reached a dead-end today. I will head to the Baabda Palace to submit the government's resignation to President Michel Aoun,” Hariri said as he addressed the Lebanese nation in a televised speech on Tuesday evening.
The protests first began on October 17, hitting Lebanon at a time of worsening financial crisis — banks were closed for a 10th day on Tuesday along with schools and businesses.
