A member of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy commission has emphasized that a recent letter sent by the International Court of Justice to the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, was a positive step taken by the World Court.

Mohammad Ebrahim Rezaie, a member of the Iranian parliament's national security and foreign policy commission, speaking on Monday, said: "The ICJ, which is based at the Hague, is the United Nations tribunal for resolving international disputes. Although the ICJ is the highest United Nations court and its decisions are binding, it has no power to enforce them, and in the past, the United States has ignored ICJ rulings.  Everyone is well-aware that the US does not abide by international laws and conventions, routinely flouts them, and is unlikely to abide by the ICJ's ruling this time round.  Nonetheless, the International Court of Justice's letter to Mike Pompeo should be seen as a positive step."

Rezaie went on to urge Iranian diplomats and the foreign ministry to  seriously pursue this case, until the ICJ issues its verdict.

Iran recently filed a lawsuit at the International Court of Justice,  against the United States stating that Washington's decision last May to abrogate the 2015 nuclear deal (JCPOA ) and re-impose sanctions against Tehran , violates the 1955 Treaty of Amity between the two countries.

Last week, the International Court of Justice sent a letter to US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, urging Washington not to take any action that may prejudice in any way, or contravene the ICJ’s upcoming ruling on a lawsuit brought by Iran against the US for breaching the 1955 Treaty of Amity by re-imposing sanctions.
