US president Donald Trump responded angrily to Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani's suggestion that the US is "playing with the lion's tail", warning of severe “consequences,” as rhetoric between the two countries' escalated.

In a direct, all-caps threat on Twitter Trump said: "To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE,"

The comments came at the same time as US secretary of state Mike Pompeo was speaking about the Trump administration "diplomatic and economic pressure campaign against Iran at Reagan Forum in Simi Valley, California.

Pompeo said that the U.S. government was launching a 24/7 Farsi-language channel on TV, radio, digital and social media formats to reach Iranians in Iran and around the globe.

Trump threatens Iran: 'You will suffer consequences'

Earlier in the day Iranian President Rouhani warned, "America should know that peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, and war with Iran is the mother of all wars."

Rouhani made the remarks at a gathering of Iranian ambassadors and heads of Iran’s diplomatic missions abroad, adding “Washington’s first objective was to have us violate the nuclear deal on our own; then they tried to provoke the IAEA but they failed. Their third step was to convince EU to ‘reform’ the JCPOA. Trump made a lot of efforts, but at the end he was forced to walk away from the agreement on his own.”

Meanwhile,in Washington, US officials familiar with the matter told Reuters that the Trump administration had launched an offensive of speeches and online communications meant to foment unrest and help pressure Iran.

Global media covered this war of words between Iran and US, echoing Iranian President remarks that US is not in a position to incite the Iranian nation against Iran's security and interests.

Al jazeera said, Iranian president says US cannot prevent Iran from exporting oil, warns a confrontation would be 'mother of all wars'.

BBC pointed out US and Iranian President trading hostile warnings, amid rising tensions between the two countries.

NBC News said Rouhani scoffed at Trump's threat to halt Iranian oil exports and said Iran has a dominant position in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil shipping waterway.

Telegraph wrote a war of words has escalated as Iran faces increased US pressure and looming sanctions after Trump's decision to withdraw the United States from a 2015 international deal over Iran's nuclear program.

According to Independent, Rouhani and Mr Trump have also previously clashed over other subjects, including the US decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem al-Quds and a ban on citizens from certain Muslim-majority countries from travelling to the US.

In May, Trump called the nuclear accord - or Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) as it is formally known - a "horrible, one-sided deal that should have never, ever been made" and withdraw from the deal.

Washington is now re-imposing the sanctions, despite objections from the UK, France, China, Russia and Germany, who all signed the 2015 agreement.

US initially planned to totally shut Iran out of global oil markets after Trump abandoned the deal, demanding all other countries to stop buying its crude by November.

But it has somewhat eased its stance since, saying that it may grant sanction waivers to some allies that are particularly reliant on Iranian supplies.
