Iranian President and his Armenian counterpart, in their meeting in Yerevan, stressed expanding cooperation between the two countries, especially economic cooperation.

Iran Press/Asia: Upon his arrival in Yerevan, the Capital of Armenia, the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani had a meeting with his Armenian counterpart Armen Sarkissian on Monday night.

During the meeting, both sides discussed bilateral ties and the latest developments as well as ways to expand cooperation in different fields, especially expansion of economic and business ties.

“Developing relationships with neighbours including Armenia is one of Iran’s foreign policy principles,” Rouhani stressed.

He further described the two countries’ cultural and historical similarities as a good opportunity to establish sustainable comprehensive bilateral relations.

“Iran and Armenia have lots of potentials and capabilities in different fields, including energy, transit and transportation, tourism, and industry, which can be used in both countries’ interests,” added the President.

Rouhani stressed using the capabilities of the private sector in both countries and joint ventures, saying that Tehran is ready to transfer its expertise and experiences to Yerevan in various fields from technical services to dam engineering and energy. 

He also praised the economic cooperation within the EAEU, adding that Iran’s presence in the economic relations of the Eurasian countries can contribute to bilateral economic relations and economic cooperations in the region. 

Iranian President emphasized further relations between the Free Trade and Economic Zones of Iran and Armenia, giving the example of Meghri and Aras, and minding the environmental protection and using both countries' potentials in boosting tourism.

Armen Sarkissian, for his part, said that it is important for his country to expand relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran, saying, “Armenia is looking for developing relations with Iran in different fields especially in the economy, industry, energy, and environment.”

Heading a high-ranking political and economic delegation, Rouhani arrived in Yerevan on Monday night to attend the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Rouhani will also have a meeting with the Prime Minister of Armenia to discuss the most important topics regarding Tehran- Yerevan relations and agreements between the two countries.

The President will also have bilateral meetings with presidents of Kazakhstan and Russia and Prime Minister of Singapore in the course of the two-day visit.

He will address the EAEU summit on Tuesday.

Iran's Energy Minister Reza Ardakanian earlier said that the prime minister of Armenia has invited the Iranian president to join Eurasian Countries' leaders.

The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) was formed in 2014 with Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Russia, Belarus as its members. Numbers of other countries including Iran, Singapore, Moldavia, and Vietnam are in the process of joining the union.
