The request for an extension of the electricity supply agreement, along with an additional 100 megawatts, was submitted by the Central Power Purchasing Agency.
According to documents issued by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), the tariff for the imported electricity from Iran’s state-owned power company, Tavanir, has been approved at a rate of up to 12.40 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Pakistan’s Economic Coordination Committee had already approved the extension of the electricity agreement with Iran in August 2023. The original Power Purchase Agreement between the two countries was signed in 2002.
According to NEPRA documents, several amendments have been made to the agreement over time. Under Amendment No. 8, an additional 100 megawatts of electricity will be imported via the Polan-Gabd transmission line.
Officials have stated that infrastructure development on both sides of the border will be necessary to facilitate the additional power supply. The revised agreement also links electricity tariffs to global oil prices, incorporating both fixed and variable components within the pricing mechanism.
