The Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, Bahram Ghasemi, has emphasised that Iran will follow up its legal case against America, and as plaintiff Iran will pursue the case until the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issues its verdict.

Iran Press/ Iran news: In an interview with IRIB on Thursday Bahram Ghasemi said: "The International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). Although the ICJ cannot enforce its Court rulings, it can however use its respected international status to create an appropriate climate beneficial to pharmaceutical companies, food producers, and companies producing aircraft components, in relation to America's unilateral sanctions."

Ghasemi added: "According to ICJ's ruling, the United States must not slap sanctions on essential items, such as food, medical equipment, and medicines, and on items which affect passenger safety in commercial aircraft, such as aircraft components and spare parts."

In further remarks, the Iranian foreign ministry spokesman said: "America has withdrawn from international multi-lateral treaties, such as the Paris climate accord, or the Iran nuclear agreement (JCPOA), or the 1955 Treaty of Amity with Iran. However,  as far as the Treaty of Amity is concerned, ICJ has ruled this US action to be illegal, and in violation of the 1955 Treaty of Amity between Iran and United States."

Earlier on October 26, Iran’s ambassador to the UN urged the international community to abide by an order issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against US sanctions on Iran.

Addressing the UN General Assembly, Iran's permanent representative to the United Nations, Gholamali Khoshroo called on the US "to implement the provisional measure, including refraining from measures such as wrongful sanctions which will aggravate the disputes."

"Moreover, to help preserve the primary role of the International Court of Justice as the principal judicial organ of the UN, other states are also expected to refrain from assisting the US in imposing any impediments in transactions involving specified items, which would amount to violation of the court’s order and would be tantamount to providing assistance to the wrongdoer," the Iranian envoy added according to Press TV.

On May 8, US President Donald Trump pulled the US out of the The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between Tehran and the world powers in 2015.

Under the JCPOA, Iran undertook to put limits on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against Tehran.

Donald Trump’s decision to scrap the nuclear deal was sharply criticised by other signatories of the deal, who have pledged to uphold their side of the agreement. 211/103
