The Joint Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri has stressed that Tehran-Beijing defense cooperation is expanding just as rapidly as political and economic cooperation between Iran and China.

Iran PressAsia: Speaking in China's capital Beijing on Wednesday, Major General Bagheri referred to longstanding military and defense cooperation between Iran and China and said this cooperation is expanding just as rapidly as political and economic cooperation between the two countries.

Major General Bagheri added: "From 2016, Tehran-Beijing relations have been strategic and a comprehensive plan to develop cooperation between the two countries has been drawn up," Iran Press reported.

He added: "China is an important country and as far as Tehran is concerned, relations and cooperation with Beijing are very important for us."

Asked why he has traveled to China, Major General Bagheri said: "It was necessary to exchange views with my Chinese counterpart on a range of technical, strategic and military matters, and thus I needed to visit Beijing."

Bagheri said he will discuss with China's top military brass recent developments in East Asia, Southwest Asia, and the wider world."

The Joint Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces also stressed that he will visit a major Chinese Naval Base and a number of warships in Shanghai, during his visit to China. He added: "I will discuss with Chinese military officials their plans for the South China Sea given the fact that the US Navy is currently threatening and saber rattling on this issue." 101/211
