Tehran (IP) - A prominent Iranian scientist returned home on Saturday, fourteen months after being detained in the US.

Iran Press/Iran news: Iranian university professor, Masoud Soleimani, was delivered to Iranian officials in Switzerland in the early hours of Saturday, landed in Tehran earlier in the day as Foreign Minister accompanying him.

Soleimani arrived at Tehran Mehrabad airport on Saturday evening and was welcomed by his family members and Iranian officials upon his arrival, Iran Press reported.

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif who had been accompanying the released scientist from Zurich said that the top scholar was arrested and imprisoned for no reason.

Zarif also expressed gladness for the return of the Iranian scientist after fourteen months and said the US is looking to hurdle Iran's development through its so-called maximum pressure campaign against the country.

Soleimani, a 49-year-old Iranian scientist, left Iran on sabbatical last year but was arrested upon arrival in Chicago and transferred to a prison in Atlanta, Georgia for unspecified reasons.

The Iranian foreign minister said in a tweet earlier in the day that the top scholar, along with Xiyue Wang — a Chinese-born US citizen who had been sentenced to 10 years in prison for espionage in Iran in 2017 — had been delivered to the Swiss officials and would “be joining their families shortly.” 101
