Iranian Secretary of Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei

Iran's Secretary of Expediency Council warned that if the UK does not return the Iranian oil tanker its forces seized illegally in Gibraltar, Iran should retaliate and seize a British oil tanker.

Iran Press/Iran news: In a tweeted on Friday Iran's Secretary of Expediency Council Mohsen Rezaei said: “the Islamic Revolution was never an initiator of tension during its 40-year-old history, however, it has not hesitated to respond to bullies. If UK doesn’t return the Iranian tanker, the duty of responsible [Iranian] bodies is to seize a British oil tanker in a retaliatory measure.”

In the wake of the illegal seizure of the Iranian oil tanker, Iran's Foreign Ministry summoned the British ambassador to Tehran Robert Macaire later on the day.

Iran has described the UK move as ‘unacceptable’ and ‘tantamount to maritime banditry’, highlighting that Britain has no right to impose its own unilateral sanctions or those of the European Union in an extraterritorial manner against the other countries, Mehr News Agency reported.

The British overseas territory Gibraltar seized a supertanker on Thursday, claiming that the move was done on suspicion of carrying crude oil to Syria in violation of European Union (EU) sanctions against the Arab country. 104/215
