Omid Nouripour, spokesman for foreign policy of the Green Group

The spokesman for the foreign policy of the Green Group has asked the federal government in Germany to do more to preserve the nuclear agreement (the Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action) with Iran.

Iran Press/Europe: Omid Nouripour, spokesman for foreign policy of the German Green Party in the Bundestag, has urged the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Heiko Maas (SPD), to travel to Iran as quickly as possible and talk directly with Iranian officials to persuade them to stay within the JCPOA (The Joint Comprehensive Plan Of Action).

The Green Party's foreign policy spokesman added: "The situation is too serious for appeals from afar," SPIEGEL reported.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Saturday that the European Union needed to continue the nuclear deal with the Islamic Republic of Iran. He added that resolving these issues would require a co-operation and a single European Union approach.

More recently, in October 2015 and February 2016, a German Foreign Affairs Minister travelled twice to Iran within a short time frame. At that time, Frank-Walter Steinmeier had visited Tehran a few months after the signing of the atomic agreement, at that time there were great hopes for a new beginning in political and economic relations between the two states. Steinmeier, as the top German diplomat, was very closely involved in negotiating the agreement.

Along with Britain, France, Russia, and China, the Federal Republic of Germany is one of the remaining partners in the agreement with Iran, after President Donald Trump of the United States withdrew from the agreement a year ago.

On Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced on the first anniversary of the withdrawal of the US from the agreement that Tehran would reduce its commitments within the JCPOA. At the same time, President Rouhani set a deadline of 60 days for Europeans to honour their commitments under the JCPOA. Due to Trump's sanctions on Tehran, trade with the EU has stalled in recent months.

Heiko Maas and his European partners rejected Iran's ultimatum but reaffirmed their determination to keep the agreement alive. 208/103
