French President while calling US President 's decision to quit Iran nuclear deal a mistake said on Wednesday that what was the matter was preserving peace and stability in the Middle East.

In an interview with German news agency Deutche Welle and ARD news network, Emmanuel Macron expressed regret over US exist from the Iran deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Referring to Donald Trump exit from the JCPOA, Macron said now Europe is responsible for guaranteeing the unilateralism that has come into existence since the end of the World War II.

Asked about his efforts while in Washington to preserve the Iran Deal and reasons behind his failure to do so, Macron said he came to realize in Washington that President Trump intended to walk away from the deal and so he proposed working on a broader deal. 

He also expressed regret over Trump's decision and maintained that it was a mistake.The French president said that as he told Iranian President Hassan Rouhani the Europeans would stay in the deal.

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday  that he was reimposing economic sanctions on Iran and pulling the United States out of an international agreement.

European leaders decried Trump's decision to withdraw from the deal, which had lifted sanctions against Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear programme.

They called on Washington not to take steps that would prevent other countries from upholding it.
