UN extends mandate of Darfur peacekeeping mission

The Security Council on Thursday agreed to extend its peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region till 31 March 2020.

Iran Press/Africa: The UN-African Union mission in the conflict-torn region, known as UNAMID, shall maintain its current troop and police ceilings, and that during this period, UNAMID shall maintain all team sites for mandate implementation, except its sector headquarters in South Darfur, Xinhua reported.

The western Sudanese region of Darfur has been plagued by a war between Sudanese government forces and the indigenous population since 2003, triggering fighting that has left more than 300,000 people dead and 2.5 million displaced.

UNAMID was established by the UN Security Council in July 2007 to help maintain and mediate peace.
