According to the institute's Public Relations Office, specialists performed a Laparoscopic Ovarian Transposition (LOT) on two prepubertal girls diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma before they underwent pelvic radiotherapy. The procedure safely repositioned their ovaries outside the radiation field to prevent irreversible damage.
Three years after the surgery, both patients have spontaneously entered puberty, experience regular menstrual cycles, and show completely healthy ovarian function. Dr. Firouzeh Ghaffari, a specialist at Royan Institute, emphasized that without this intervention, permanent ovarian failure and the loss of future fertility would have been highly likely.
Highlighting the importance of quality of life for cancer survivors, Dr. Ghaffari noted that as cancer survival rates improve, fertility preservation has become an integral part of modern care. She stressed that this success story underscores the critical need for early, multidisciplinary collaboration among oncology, surgical, and reproductive medicine teams to effectively treat the malignancy while safeguarding the patients' future prospects for parenthood.
