Recent polling by American Research Group (ARG) indicates that Donald Trump has reached the lowest approval rating of his second presidential term, with only 35% of Americans approving of his performance, while 63% disapprove.

Why it matters:

The decline in approval highlights significant discontent among the populace in the U.S., particularly regarding Trump's economic policies. As public sentiment shifts, it raises concerns about his political viability heading into future elections.

By the numbers:

Trump's approval rating has remained stable at 35% for three consecutive months, with disapproval growing from 62% in November and December to 63% in January. In February 2025, at the start of his second term, his approval was higher at 43%, with 51% disapproving. The perception of his economic management has also taken a hit, with only 32% of respondents supporting his economic policies, as 64% evaluate his administration negatively.

What the data are saying:

According to AP-NORC data, just 38% of Americans approve of Trump's immigration policies, while around 60% believe his policies have led to increased living costs. Analysts have expressed concerns that the ongoing decline in Trump's popularity could pose significant challenges for the Republican Party in upcoming elections, particularly amid falling support among younger voters.

On the ground:

The sharp decline in approval among Generation Z, with a net popularity of negative 32%, could have important political consequences for the 2026 midterm elections. Despite the White House refuting the survey results, the continuing trend of diminishing popularity may jeopardize the Republican Party's prospects in the near future.
