Baku (IP) - The president of Azerbaijan praised Iran's support of a peaceful solution over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, saying "Iran is our friend and a brother country."

Iran Press/ Asia: In a message to the people of Azerbaijan on Friday on the occasion of the liberation of Aghdam city in the Republic of Azerbaijan, which was broadcast live on the country's television channels, Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev said: "The Armenians could not transit weapons to Armenia through Iran because Iran is our friend and a brother country."

Noting that Iran has closed its airspace for the weapon transit to Armenia, the president of Azerbaijan added: "Iran considered our request in this regard and did not want the Republic of Azerbaijan citizens to be killed with these weapons."

The troops of the Republic of Azerbaijan arrived in Aghdam city in Nagorno-Karabakh on Friday based on the framework of a tripartite agreement between the presidents of Azerbaijan, Russia, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, signed on November 9.

The Aghdam city, which was occupied by Armenian forces in 1993, was returned to the Republic of Azerbaijan under this agreement.

Based on the agreement, the remaining two cities of Kalbajar and Lachin in Nagorno-Karabakh will be returned to the Republic of Azerbaijan by 11 December.
