The Russian deputy foreign minister says the meeting of the Joint Commission of the Iran Nuclear Deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), has dismissed the US’ illegal push to return the UN sanctions against Iran.

Iran Press/Europe: "We are witnessing an important process of consolidation of parties to the JCPOA against this American venture. We are certain that the results of today’s event will help our colleagues in New York continue their work in the right direction," Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told reporters Tuesday.

Ryabkov also emphasized that all the meeting participants (Iran, Russia, China, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom) again backed preserving the deal.

According to him, they took stock of the JCPOA’s current implementation and discussed steps to boost the chances of saving it.

Moreover, the deputy minister pointed out the lack of legal grounds behind the US attempts to reinstate sanctions against Iran and impose its "skewed and unilateral interpretation of the situation" on the world, disregarding any arguments.

"We are certain that if the international community and the UN Security Council members will continue to stick to principled positions on this issue, which is what we are working on, then the situation will emerge when the US will be alone in the UN Security Council with this paradoxical point of view,” he said.

“At least, such a unique development seems rather likely. Therefore, the US can end up losing a lot if it does not review its unfounded position and does not take obvious things into account," the senior diplomat underlined.

Ryabkov also informed that the meeting in Vienna discussed Russian President Vladimir Putin’s initiative on organizing a summit on the Persian Gulf security.

"The Russian delegation used the occasion to substantively deliver not only details of this proposal, but also to promote the colleagues' understanding of the concept of collective security in the Persian Gulf area, which we put forward in an updated form last year," he noted.

Meanwhile, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi also said all the signatories to the JCPOA have unanimously dismissed the US’ illegal push to return the UN sanctions against Iran.

Addressing the reporters on the sidelines of a session of the JCPOA Joint Commission in Vienna on Tuesday, the Iranian senior diplomat said the latest meeting of the JCPOA Joint Commission revolved around the US’ attempts at the UN Security Council to reinstate the sanctions on Iran by resorting to the snapback mechanism of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

All parties to the JCPOA –Iran, Russia, China, the UK, France, and Germany- have reiterated that the US is not a participant in the nuclear deal and has no right to use the mechanisms embedded in the JCPOA or the UNSC Resolution 2231, he underlined.

“All JCPOA members and the majority of the international community members are opposed to the US’ unilateral policies and its policy of weakening multilateralism, international organizations, and multilateral approaches in international relations. Everybody complains about the measures the US is taking to ruin the international institutions,” Araghchi stated.
