The Foreign Affairs panel's Democrats told their followers not to be “DISTRACTED BY ALL CAPS,” adding that the United States is not attacking Iran.
The Foreign Affairs Committee's Democrats in their tweet also focused on the Russian government’s interference in the 2016 election, which they added was an actual “ALL-CAPS-WORTHY PROBLEM.”
“BUT RUSSIA *DID* ATTACK OUR 2016 ELECTIONS TO HELP DONALD TRUMP, AND IS DOING SO AGAIN,” the Democrats said. “TRUMP REFUSES TO HOLD RUSSIA ACCOUNTABLE AND SIDES WITH PUTIN OVER OUR INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY.”
Trump continues to face backlash for appearing to side with Russian President Vladimir Putin over his denial of election interference last week. Trump later said that he misspoke.
He also drew criticism last week after for saying "no" when asked if Russia continued to pose a threat to the country.
The White House issued an explanation for Trump's comments shortly after, saying that Trump wasn’t saying “no” to a reporter’s question, but rather "saying 'no' to answering questions."
Democrats on the House Foreign Affairs Committee tweeted a retort to the president's message, saying, "DON'T BE DISTRACTED BY ALL CAPS. WE’RE NOT ATTACKING IRAN. BUT RUSSIA *DID* ATTACK OUR 2016 ELECTIONS TO HELP DONALD TRUMP, AND IS DOING SO AGAIN. TRUMP REFUSES TO HOLD RUSSIA ACCOUNTABLE AND SIDES WITH PUTIN OVER OUR INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY. THAT'S AN ALL-CAPS-WORTHY PROBLEM".
In a direct, all-caps threat on Twitter Trump said: "To Iranian President Rouhani: NEVER, EVER THREATEN THE UNITED STATES AGAIN OR YOU WILL SUFFER CONSEQUENCES THE LIKES OF WHICH FEW THROUGHOUT HISTORY HAVE EVER SUFFERED BEFORE,"
The comments came at the same time as US secretary of state Mike Pompeo was speaking about the Trump administration "diplomatic and economic pressure campaign against Iran at Reagan Forum in Simi Valley, California.
Pompeo said that the U.S. government was launching a 24/7 Farsi-language channel on TV, radio, digital and social media formats to reach Iranians in Iran and around the globe.
