Police and the FBI responded to the scene Sunday. There was a second item, a backpack that police were clearing, said Austin Police Chief Brian Manley.
He also told people to stay in their homes and avoid touching any suspicious packages, but did not say whether there was any link between the latest blast and the earlier parcel bombs.
The latest explosion in the Texas capital comes less than a week after police said three package explosions that happened over 10 days were connected. Those explosions killed a man and a teenager, and injured two others.
Police initially raised the possibility of a hate crime because victims in the first two explosions were black. The third apparent target was Hispanic, so it's not clear whether that pattern is intentional because a motive is still unknown.
