Iranian students received 3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals in the 49th International Physics Olympiad held in Lisbon, Portugal.
The first IPhO was held in Warsaw (Poland) in 1967, and it was organized by Prof. Czeslaw Scilowski. Inspired by the success and the positive experience gained from the organization of the International Mathematics Olympiads that already existed in 1959, physicists were stimulated to get involved in physics education and became interested in comparing knowledge of the best students from around the world.
Meanwhile, Iranian Chemistry Olympiad team grabbed 4 silver medals in the 2018 International Chemistry Olympiad (IChO) held in Slovakia and Czech Republic, winning third position in the contest.
Interestingly, a Saudi student who won an international chemistry tournament at the Olympiad refused to stand next to a representative of the Israeli regime.
Badr Salman al-Mulhim, who chose to stand next to an Iranian flag-bearer, Arshia Khadem, was a topic of social media discussions on Sunday after a widely shared video showed him changing his position when he realized the next person to him was going to be an Israeli student.
The IChO 2018 took place in the Czech Republic and Slovakia from July 19-29, with the participation of 304 contestants from 82 countries and territories.
After the victory of the Islamic Revolution (1979), the Islamic Republic of Iran first took part in those Olympiads in 1987 despite many problems resulting from the war with Iraq and, during the same year, it overtook many countries in mathematics Olympiad.
The 1st International Nanotechnology Olympiad dubbed INO , was also held in Iran, at the Pardis Technology Park, for six days, on April 10th 2018.
