Iran has forthrightly condemned a comment by US president Donald Trump, that he could win the Afghan war and wipe the country "off the face of the Earth".

Iran Press/Iran news: Donald Trump's claim that the US could wipe Afghanistan "off the face of the Earth", is unacceptable and a threat to international peace and security, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Abbas Mousavi said on Wednesday.

The spokesman also noted that Iran stands by the people of Afghanistan, and its government, Iran Press reported.

US President Donald Trump said that he could win the war in Afghanistan in a week, but that he doesn’t want to kill millions of people and wipe Afghanistan “off the face of the earth.”

"If we wanted to fight a war in Afghanistan and win it, I could win that war in a week. I just don't want to kill 10 million people," Trump said in a meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan at the White House on Monday.

Afghanistan has demanded the United States clarify these racial remarks.

“The government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan calls for clarification on the U.S. president’s statements expressed at a meeting with the Pakistan prime minister, via diplomatic means and channels,” Afghan President Ashraf Ghani’s office said in a statement on Tuesday.

The US and its allies invaded Afghanistan under the guise of the war on terror in 2001. While the invasion ended the Taliban's rule in the country, it has failed to eliminate the militant group.

A new study, conducted by Brown University’s Watson Institute for International Studies, shows that almost 100,000 people have been killed and the same number have been wounded in Afghanistan since 2001.
