Iran’s professional football club Persepolis has managed to chalk up a notable victory against Esteghlal at the end of the 89h showdown between the arch-rivals in the Iranian capital, Tehran.  

Iran Press/Iran news: Branko Ivankovic’s men clad in red overpowered the Blues 1-0 in a thrilling match played at Azadi Stadium, in west Tehran.

Perspolis which is currently at the top of the Persian Gulf Pro League and has won the last two seasons, won the match through a header by Nouroallahi at the minute of 20, Iran Press reported.

The blues had the chance at the end of the first half to level the match on a penalty shootout but Farshid Esmeaeli failed to hit the target and the ball went out above the post.  

With this win, Perspolis has so far defeated its homie 22 times while Esteghlal has had 26 wins. In the rest of face offs the two had to share the points in draws.

Persepolis cemented their place at the top of Iran professional League with 48 points, five points above Esteghlal.

The match between the two prominent football teams, held in presence of the chairman of FIFA's Referees Committee, Pierluigi Collina who was officially invited by the Head of Iranian Football Federation Mehdi Taj.

Upon arrival in Tehran earlier today, Collina said the derby was comparable to the games of Spanish premier teams of Real Madrid and Barcellona in terms of importance to the teams and their fans. 101/211
