Nearly 2,000 coronavirus deaths in US for second consecutive day

Nearly 2,000 novel coronavirus deaths were recorded in the United States for the second day in a row, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University as of 8:30 pm Wednesday (0030 GMT Thursday).

Iran PressAmerica: The record-breaking figure of 1,973 deaths (slightly higher than the previous day's toll of 1,939) brings the total number of US fatalities to 14,695.

The US death toll now exceeds that of Spain, which has suffered 14,555 deaths but has not surpassed Italy, whose toll stands at 17,669, AFP reported.

New York Governor Cuomo said he never thought would experience something on the scale of 9/11 attacks again, describing death toll from coronavirus as "almost unimaginable" as the number of deaths over the past 24 hours hit a new high of 779 across the state.

New York state required all residents to stay home except for essential business on March 20 and now more than 94% of Americans are under similar orders.

The novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), was detected late last year in Wuhan, the largest city in Hubei province in central China.

Today, almost all countries around the world are fighting COVID-19.

The virus has affected more than 1.5 million people worldwide, with at least 88,000 deaths, but more than 330,000 people have recovered from COVID-19.
