London (IP) – A number of researchers, Bahraini libertarians and civil activists in London exposed the recent Bahraini election scandal and called for an end to the British government's double standard for democracy and human rights.

Iran PressEurope: Josie Thum, a senior researcher at the Bahrain Institute for Rights and Democracy (BIRD), said, according to a report entitled "The political process is fake," from a legal and political perspective, the recent elections in Bahrain were completely arbitrary.

She added that it is necessary to talk with the British government and other governments that support the Bahraini regime in order to increase international pressure on this regime.

The second round of parliamentary elections in Bahrain is underway on Saturday, November 19, 2022. Bahrain's parliamentary elections were held on November 12, 2022, but the assignment of about 35 parliamentary seats was postponed to the second round.

Rabab Khaddaj, a researcher at the BIRD, which is based in London, said that the Bahraini regime tried to show a lot of participation in the recent show elections with statistics.

She added that while the Western governments, including the United States and the United Kingdom, continue to support the repressive regime of Bahrain, Al Khalifa limited participation in the elections to his supporters and groups by preventing the participation of a significant part of political activists.

She pointed out that the Bahraini regime has given citizenship to non-Bahraini citizens, such as Pakistani and Indian citizens, so that they can vote in the elections desired by the regime.

One of the Bahraini political activists, who lost his citizenship by order of Al Khalifa, said that now about 1,400 political prisoners are locked up in Bahraini prisons.

According to a former representative of the people of Bahrain, who was deprived of citizenship due to opposition to the policies of the Al Khalifa regime, the value of the Al Khalifa regime's properties in the UK reaches more than six billion pounds, and London, as a supporter of the Al Khalifa regime, has closed its eyes to the wealth of the Bahraini people and their transfer to Britain.
