Iran ranks first in Russia's Astarkhan trade turnover

The Islamic Republic of Iran won first place with the largest volume of commercial cargo transportation in the Russian ports of Astrakhan last month (January).

Iran PressEurope: The amount of cargo handling in Astrakhan ports in January 2021 increased by about 27%, compared to the same period in 2020, reaching 262 thousand tons. However, the above index has been declining in other parts of Russia.

Public Joint-Stock Company of Astrakhansky Port Company (Solyanka Port), 53% of the shares belonging to the Islamic Republic, gained the first rank among Astrakhan ports by loading and unloading 54,000 tons of goods during the same period.

The private joint-stock company, "Astrakhan Seaport" with 46 thousand tons and the "Central Cargo Port" as an LTD company, won the first to third ranks in the province, respectively with 25 thousand tons.

According to the Ministry of Industry of Astrakhan's official statistics, the port of Solyanka was ranked first among 15 active ports on the Volga River and the region of Olia and the Republic of Dagestan in 2020, both in terms of cargo tonnage and several berths.

According to Astrakhan Governor Igor Babushkin, increasing commodity turnover is one of the Astrakhan region's main tasks, and the Caspian cluster, including the Special Economic Zone LOTUS - has helped to achieve this goal.

He said that despite the overall decrease in the volume of cargo transportation in Russian ports in January, the Astrakhan region's seaports increased this index by 27.2%.

Mehdi Akouchakian, Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Astrakhan, congratulated the first rank in loading and unloading in the port of Solyanka and expressed hope that the port will be able to repeat the record in coming years. Javad Purdast, the Iranian Director of Solyanka port also said: "Solyanka is the largest seaport in the Astrakhan region in terms of size and number of piers, and 53% of its share belongs to Iran and the rest to Russia."

He added: "Good economic activity of the port has strengthened Iran and Russia's economic interests in the economic field."

"The port plays an important role in exchanging goods between Iran, Russia, the Eurasian Economic Union, and the Shanghai Economic Organization," Purdast said.
