Tehran (IP) - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh welcomed Yemeni Ansarullah’s agreement with the resigned government to exchange prisoners and called on the two sides to implement the agreement as soon as possible.

Iran PressIran News: Khatibzadeh said in a statement on Tuesday that the agreement of Yemen's Ansarullah with the resigned government on the exchange of prisoners was a step towards helping to resolve the current crisis in Yemen peacefully.

He added: "This agreement showed that the Yemeni-Yemeni talks are the only solution to this country’s current problems."

Khatibzadeh expressed hope that the agreement would be fruitful and that the process of releasing the remaining prisoners would continue, paving the way for Yemeni-Yemeni political dialogue and leading to an end to the hostilities and aggression in Yemen.

Martin Griffiths, the UN special envoy for Yemen, announced on Sunday that an agreement had been reached between representatives of Yemen's Ansarullah Movement and the resigned government to exchange more than 1,000 prisoners in the first phase.

The United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, with the support of the United States and several other countries, have launched a military offensive in Yemen since March 26, 2015, under the pretext of returning ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi to power.

Saudi Arabia and its allies' war in Yemen has killed more than 16,000 Yemenis, injured tens of thousands, and displaced millions.
