Report:

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) is urging the United Nations Security Council to convene an emergency session to address the escalating threats to journalists in Gaza.

Why it matters:

The targeting of journalists in Gaza has sparked international condemnation and renewed calls for accountability. Media organizations and human rights advocates argue that press freedom and the right to information are under siege, demanding immediate global intervention.

What they’re saying:

RSF emphasized that the deliberate targeting of journalists constitutes a breach of the Geneva Conventions and the Rome Statute.

Al Jazeera Media Network issued a separate statement, highlighting Israel's attempt to “bury the truth” through systematic attacks on journalists.

The network described the situation as “the deadliest conflict for media professionals in modern history,” citing 23 months of continuous coverage despite mounting casualties.

Al Jazeera: “Those holding positions of global leadership have a moral and legal responsibility to end the deliberate killing of journalists."

Recent Attacks:

The latest Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis killed at least five journalists, including Al Jazeera cameraman Mohammed Salama. The attack occurred just two weeks after the death of prominent Al Jazeera journalist Anas al-Sharif and four colleagues outside al-Shifa Hospital.

Israel acknowledged targeting al-Sharif, who had become a prominent voice from Gaza.

Government Media Office confirmed the deaths of:

Hussam al-Masri (Reuters contractor)

Mohammad Salama

Mariam Abu Daqqa

Moaz Abu Taha

Reuters response:

Reuters expressed devastation over the loss of al-Masri and injuries sustained by another contractor, Hatem Khaled. The news agency is seeking urgent medical assistance and more information from authorities in Gaza and Israel.

Global reaction:

UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese called for sanctions, an arms embargo, and an end to the blockade. She posted on X: “Rescuers killed in line of duty. Scenes like this unfold every moment in Gaza, often unseen, largely undocumented.”
