As Italy’s Deputy Prime Minister challenges Macron on deploying troops to Ukraine, a diplomatic crisis sparked between the two countries with France summoning the Italian ambassador Matteo Salvini.

Significance:

The Ukrainian war of attrition has turned to an international crisis where the U.S. is tryiyng to make benefit out of it and while the European countries are getting exuhsted such that the intra-European ties are tarnishing.

What's happened:

In comments to reporters earlier this week, Salvini dismissed Macron’s proposal using a Milanese dialect phrase equivalent to “get lost,” directly addressing the French President.

What he's saying:

Matteo Salvini: "You go there if you want. Put your helmet on, your jacket, your rifle and you go to Ukraine."

The big picture:

Salvini, the populist leader of the right-wing League party and also Italy's transport minister in the nationalist, conservative government led by Giorgia Meloni, has repeatedly criticized Macron, especially over Ukraine.

The Italian ambassador was summoned on Friday, marking the latest in a series of diplomatic clashes between Paris and Rome before and after Meloni took power in 2022.

What's going on:

French President Emmanuel Macron, a staunch advocate for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia, has been actively collaborating with Western allies—most notably British Prime Minister Keir Starmer—to mobilize international backing for Ukraine for a potential ceasefire.

In Ukraine:

Fighting remains intense across several sectors of eastern Ukraine, with Russian forces pressing offensives in Donetsk, Luhansk, and parts of Kharkiv oblasts. While Moscow claims multiple territorial gains, many remain unverified, and Ukrainian counteractions are reported in some areas.
