UK (IP) - People in London held mourning rituals on Ashura Day and the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions.

Iran PressEurope: The rituals were held in the Islamic Centre of England on Thursday night, hours after the religious center was reopened.

The Islamic Centre of England became again the liaison of the lovers and followers of Ahlul-Bayt (Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his Progeny) from different nationalities on the night of Ashura, an hour after reopening.

The people mourned Imam Hussain's (AS) martyrdom, chanting elegies and beating their chests.

Delivering a speech, the Head of England's Islamic Center, Hojjatoeslam Hashem Mousavi, enumerated dignity, self-esteem, freedom-seeking, and steadfastness in following divine causes as the brilliant characteristics of Imam Hussain's (AS) and his companions.

He said following Imam Hussain's (AS) path ensures human prosperity.

For three months, the British government halted the Islamic Center's religious, educational, and cultural activities; yet, due to the Muslims' inclusive protests and legal follow-ups, it was reopened last night, on the eve of Ashura Day.

Shia Muslims and people of other faiths hold mourning rituals during the first ten days of Muharram to remember Imam Hossein (AS) and his 72 companions, who were all martyred after fighting thousands of soldiers of the ruling tyrant of the time, caliph Yazid I in Iraq's Karbala desert in 680 AD.

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram. In 61 AH (October 10, 680 CE), Imam Hussein (AS) and his faithful companions were martyred in the battle against the Kufa army led by 'Umar b. Sa'd.

This day is significant for Shia due to what occurred in Karbala on this day.
