UN: No one is above the laws of war

By condemning deadly strike on Taez, the UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen condemned the strike on a petrol station east of the city of Taez.

Iran Press/America: “Innocent lives continue to be lost in Yemen because of this conflict,” The UN humanitarian coordinator in Yemen, Lise Grande said on Sunday in a statement, without identifying the assailants.

This is the second such attack during the holy month of Ramadhan. Nine days ago, dozens of people, including children and health workers, were injured and killed when strikes hit Sana’a. During the first quarter of the year, more than 900 civilian casualties have been reported, Iran Press reported.

“The real numbers are almost certainly higher,” said Grande.

“The parties must realize that they are accountable for every man, woman and child killed or injured in this senseless conflict. No one is above the laws of war.”

The attack on Friday killed 12 civilians, seven of them children, she said, updating an earlier death toll.

Also, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has assured that the world body will remain impartial in efforts to resolve the country’s conflict, rejecting accusations that its envoy was siding with rebels.

The conflict has triggered what the UN describes as the world’s worst humanitarian crisis with more than two-thirds of the population in need of aid.

On May 16, UNICEF Executive Director said since the Saudi-led war in Yemen began four years ago, 7,300 children have been killed or seriously injured. These are verified numbers. The actual numbers are no doubt higher. 104
