The Muslim Council of Britain is deeply alarmed by the sharp increases in Islamophobic hate crimes over the past year, with offenses doubling in some areas.

Iran Press/Europe: Figures obtained under the Freedom of Information Act revealed that West Yorkshire Police recorded 561 Islamophobic offenses between October 2023 and September 2024, up from 362 in the previous 12 months.

Meanwhile, the statistics showed 215 anti-Semitic offences were recorded by the force in the year to September 2024 - up from 77 in the previous 12 months.

Greater Manchester Police reported a spike in Islamophobic offenses from an average of 39 per month to 85 in August 2024. West Yorkshire Police recorded a similar rise from 39 per month to 94 during the same period.

These figures highlight the systemic neglect of Islamophobia as a form of racism and underscore the urgent need for decisive government action.

The MCB has expressed serious concerns about the government’s approach to tackling hate crime and racism more broadly.

The council urged the government to strengthen existing hate crime laws, implement targeted measures to address Islamophobia and allocate resources to support victims and prevent further incidents.

It also highlighted the importance of collaboration and investment in education to promote understanding and ensure safety for Muslim communities.
