Members of weapon, drug trafficking int'l gang arrested in northwestern of Iran

Western Azerbaijan (IP) - Iran's Ministry of Intelligence reported the arrest of the members of an international weapon, ammunition, and drug trafficking gang in Western Azerbaijan province.

Iran PressIran News: The intelligence ministry announced that the international gang was driven by two foreigners from within Iran, which was identified and arrested during two well-planned operations.   

During the operations, the gang's head was arrested along with three other key members with 520 kilograms of heroin seized from them.

According to the report, large depots of weapons and ammunition in the border villages were also identified, and during the inspection, more than 500 small arms, assault rifles, hunting weapons as well as significant amounts of ammunition were seized.

According to reports, in 2018 alone, Iranian forces carried out 1,557 operations against drug traffickers, seizing approximately 807 tons of different types of narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

According to the World Drug Report 2019 of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, in 2017, Iran had seized the largest quantity of opiates, accounting for 39% of the global total.
