Abbas Mousavi

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman said on Friday that 'INSTEX' or EU mechanism for trade must meet Iran's needs, otherwise Tehran's next steps would be more decisive.

Iran Press/Iran news: Abbas Mousavi said If INSTEX fails to meet Iran’s demands within the framework of Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Tehran will take the next steps more decisively.

“The implementation of the EU's trade mechanism has been delayed due to some lack of commitments," he said.

"After Iran set an ultimatum for the European signatories of the JCPOA, they began some steps to expedite the implementation of INSTEX, but the steps are not enough for us, because the way of its implementation and its timeframe is important to us," Mousavi added.

Mousavi pointed to Vienna meeting with attendance of JCPOA signatories FMs and said “Iran wants European countries to take practical steps in this regard and live up to their commitments within the framework of JCPOA.”

Iran’s next steps over JCPOA depend on the practical measures by the European countries, Foreign Ministry Spokesman Mousavi emphasized.

US Imposing New Sanctions on Iran out of Desperation

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman shrugged off recent sanctions imposed by the US against the Islamic Republic, saying Washington is taking the measure against Tehran out of desperation.

“Their new sanctions, like previous embargoes, are ineffective and out of desperation, and lacks any legal basis,” Mousavi told to the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) on Thursday night.

However, the spokesman added, these sanctions undermine the foundations of the international mechanisms.

He further pointed to a recent move by the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) to shoot down a US spy drone over Iran’s territory and said the Americans misunderstood that the Iranian Armed Forces’ hands are empty in confrontation with their military power.

“With the shooting down of their intruding drone, which was also of strategic importance, the power and readiness of the Armed Forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran were proved to everyone…,” he noted.

The IRGC said on June 20 that a US spy drone that violated the Iranian territorial airspace in the early hours of the day was shot down by the IRGC Aerospace Force’s air defense unit near the Kooh-e-Mobarak region in the southern province of Hormozgan.

The intruding drone was reportedly shot by Iran’s homegrown air defense missile system “Khordad-3rd”.
