French carmaker Renault will maintain its presence in Iran while taking measures to avoid the risk of penalties for breaching renewed US sanctions, Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn said Friday.

Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn has stated that the company has a future in Iran and it is not going to damage Renault's interests.

"Renault, counted 160,000 cars sold in Iran last year out of its total 3.76 million", Renault CEO concluded.

In May, Washington announced its decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal and re-impose sanctions on Tehran, a move that prompted an international backlash.

According to France 24, Renault CEO Carlos Ghosn told its shareholders on Friday that they will not abandon Iran even if they have to downsize their activities very strongly.

Earlier, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Washington will increase the financial pressure on Iran and threatened to impose the "strongest sanctions in history" on the Islamic Republic if Tehran refuses to change the course of its foreign and domestic policy.

Also, this month, another French carmaker Peugeot-maker PSA Group also announced that it had begun to suspend its joint venture activities in Iran to avoid US sanctions after Washington's unlawful withdrawal from the JCPOA back in May.

French oil major Total has also announced that it will pull out of a multibillion-dollar gas project in Iran if it cannot  secure a waiver from US sanctions.
