Region Hopeful for stop of Israeli war in Gaza

Meanwhile, A senior Hamas delegation is traveling to Egypt for the latest round of negotiations aimed at pausing – if not stopping – Israel’s relentless war on Gaza, even as the prospect of a devastating ground offensive in Rafah in the enclave’s south looms.

Egypt’s foreign minister says he is “hopeful” about a new proposal for a Gaza truce as a Hamas delegation is due in Cairo for talks.

“We are hopeful,” Sameh Shoukry said in Riyadh at the World Economic Forum, adding, “The proposal has taken into account the positions of both sides and has tried to extract moderation.”

Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister says agreements between the kingdom and the US are “very very close”.

“Most of the work has already been done. We have the broad outlines of what we think needs to happen on the Palestinian front,” Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud said during a panel discussion at the World Economic Forum’s special meeting in Riyadh.

Blinken, who was on the same panel, added that an agreement “is potentially very close to completion”.
