Zarif departs Tehran to New York

Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif left Tehran for New York on Friday morning to attend the 74th Meeting of the UN General Assembly.

Iran Press/Iran news: Foreign Ministry spokesman, Seyyed Abbas Mousavi said late on Thursday that Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will leave Tehran for New York Friday morning.

On Thursday, Iran’s Foreign Minister had said that the United States Secretary of State Pompeo was trying to delay issuing of visas for the Iranian delegation to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York, Iran Press reported.

UN announced in a statement that leaders of the countries will take part in the series of sessions with the aim of beefing up efforts in the fields of climate change, sustainable growth, health and global peace in addition to the General Assembly.

Mike Pompeo tries to dodge US obligation to issue visas for UN delegates by resorting to self-arrogated designations,” Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif tweeted on Thursday. He didn't clarify whether the delay may be linked to the US' blacklisting of Zarif at the end of July.

However, the United States as the host government is obliged to issue visas to diplomats who serve at UN headquarters.

Finally, Iran's UN mission announced on Thursday that Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif will visit New York for the annual gathering of world leaders at the United Nations

The United Nations General Assembly is one of the six principal organs of the UN, the only one in which all member nations have equal representation, and the main deliberative, policy-making, and representative organ of the UN.
