Rome (IP) - Mario Draghi has resigned as Italy’s prime minister, triggering the dissolution of parliament and pushing the country into snap elections in September; the process which has also put the country in a political crisis.

Iran PressEurope: Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of Italy, submitted his resignation to President Sergio Mattarella last Thursday following the failure to revive the government of national unity and the withdrawal of two center-right parties - Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia and Matteo Salvini's League from the coalition.

Italy’s president on Thursday accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Mario Draghi, dissolved Parliament, and called for new elections,

Mattarella has dissolved Italy's parliament and State broadcaster RAI said that national elections would be held on September 25.

 At the same time, the President asked Draghi to remain in office until the election and the formation of a new government to do his job.

Draghi’s exit spells trouble for Italy and Europe at a time of acute economic challenges. 

A week ago, the president rejected Draghi's first resignation and asked him to hold further talks with parliamentarians to avoid snap elections.

Last Wednesday, during a speech in the Senate, Draghi emphasized the need for a strong government that has the broad support of the parliament, referring to Italy's internal challenges such as the economic crisis, inflation, employment, and external challenges, especially regarding energy and the war in Ukraine.

Draghi had previously announced that his national unity government, from left to far-right parties, would be invalidated and discredited after the crisis caused by the split in the ruling coalition.

Meanwhile, Draghi's resignation and the instability of the political situation in Italy have intensified the political tensions in the country.

Sergio Battelli, the representative of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, told Iranpress reporter in Rome: "The main root of the current political crisis in Italy was initially started by the 5-Star Movement (led by former Italian Prime Minister Conte), and then the two parties the Italian League leader, Matteo Salvini, and "Forza Italia" (led by Berlusconi).

He added: "These three parties caused the fall of the government while the country was facing economic and social challenges."
