Italy (IP) - People in the large cities of Italy held demonstrations against NATO, calling for maintaining peace in Ukraine.

Iran PressEurope: More than 2,000 Italian citizens in the capital Rome blamed NATO for the current situation in Ukraine while opposing the war and calling for an end to the conflict in the country.

On Wednesday morning, Russian President Vladimir Putin officially announced a special military operation against Ukraine.  

An Italian citizen told Iran Press correspondent: " We oppose NATO expansionism. We want peace and expect the European Union to be unbiased over the Ukrainian issue". 

Hundreds of Italian students took part in the anti-NATO demonstrations on Sunday, holding placards protesting against NATO and the US hegemonic policies and double standards.

Russia says its operation in Ukraine is not the beginning of an invasion but an attempt to prevent a third world war. 

The US and Europe began to exert diplomatic and economic pressures on Russia.

Yet, the US and NATO have refused to dispatch forces to help Ukraine. 

Ukraine knew itself as an ally of the US.
