The secretaries of national security councils of Iran and the Russian Federation, Ali Shamkhani and Nicolai Petrushev, met and discussed issues relating to joint efforts to confront terrorism as well as expansion of cooperation between Tehran and Moscow.

Iran news/ According to an Iran Press report, at the meeting on Thursday morning, Ali Shamkhani referred to successful cooperation between Iran and Russia in their joint fight against Terrorism, and talked of exchange of ideas between Tehran and Moscow on important regional and international issues of concern.

Shamkhani also stressed expansion of political, economic and security cooperation between Tehran and Moscow, and thanked the Russian government for supporting the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). He added: "The American administrations unilateralism and its attempts to weaken international institutions is dangerous for security and economic reasons, and Tehran and Moscow should seriously stand up to this joint threat."

In further remarks, Shamkhani said: "The Americans are using the weapon of sanctions against Iran, Russia, and China, precisely because they are unable to stop the rising clout, power and economic muscle of these countries, and we can work together to counter US economic sanctions".

The secretary of Russia's national security council, Nicolai Petrushev, for his part praised the effective role that Iran, Russia, and Turkey play in fighting terrorists in Syria. Petrushev said the US administration has done everything it can to prevent restoration of security and calm in Syria, by using terrorists and terrorism  as tools to further its objectives in Syria.
