Iran’s envoy and permanent representative to the UN said Iran, as a Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty member, should be able to use the advantages of peaceful nuclear energy, stressing that according to the UN Nuclear Watchdog, Tehran has been fully cooperating with the body.

Iran Press/America: Majid Takht Ravanchi stated on Wednesday that, as an NPT signatory, Iran had the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes and underlined that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) had always approved Tehran’s full abiding by its nuclear commitments.

"When the US illegally pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the other remaining participants called on Iran not to behave the same way as the US, as they would compensate for Iran's losses," he said.

"Iran waited for one year, but nothing happened in practice," the diplomat said, adding that Iran decided to reduce its commitments in a multi-stage way; the same was carried out under Article 36 of the UN Security Council.

Takht Ravanchi noted that according to the Iranian laws, the government had obligations, some of which, such as the 20 percent uranium enrichment, have already begun.

"Iran has announced that the US should return to the JCPOA, which means that it must live up to its obligations under the deal," he said, adding, "The US must remove all the sanctions specified in the JCPOA."
