Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the Israeli regime initiated “illegal and terrorist aggression” against Iran during ongoing nuclear negotiations with the United States, calling the attacks a blatant violation of international law.

Why it matters:

The Iranian president' remarks at the ECO summit in Azerbaijan reflect Tehran's views on the Israeli strikes—and U.S. support—as a coordinated effort to derail diplomacy and provoke escalation.

What he's saying:

Pezeshkian emphasized that this aggression violated Article 2, Paragraph 4 of the UN Charter and was conducted with the cooperation of the U.S. military.

Over a 12-day period, he said the attacks targeted off-duty Iranian military personnel, university professors, civilians and peaceful nuclear facilities under IAEA supervision.

Pezeshkian added that Iran's armed forces responded under Article 51 of the UN Charter, invoking the right to legitimate self-defense, and delivered a “decisive and unforgettable” response to the aggressors and prevented the expansion of war in the region.
