Russia Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov

The Russian top diplomat called the US stance on Iran's arms embargo contradictory with its extensive arms sale to the West Asian countries.

Iran PressEurope: Russia's Permanent Representative to the international organizations in Vienna Mikhail Ulyanov addressed the US efforts to extend arms embargoes on Iran while also selling arms to countries in the West Asian region.

"The US attempts to make arms embargo against Iran indefinite and comprehensive look extremely questionable in the light of US enormous arms supplies to the region. Whose policy in fact does lead to destabilization of the situation in the Middle East?"  Mikhail Ulyanov tweeted on Monday.

As Iran's arms embargo date approaching to its end in October, the United States, despite withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), is still trying to come up with new plan to show it can be still influential in the implementation of JCPOA and the UN Security Council resolution 2231.

Russia, China, and the European Union, meanwhile, have insisted that the US withdrew from the JCPOA and is no longer a party to the agreement, thus has no right to use the terms of the agreement or Resolution 2231.

Ulyanov earlier had said that "in June, the United States introduced a draft resolution at the UN Security Council to extend the arms embargo on Iran before it expires in mid-October. Russia and China have already voiced their opposition to the draft resolution."

In 2015, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) with China, France, Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, the US, and the European Union.

It required Iran to scale back its nuclear program and severely downgrade its uranium reserves in exchange for sanctions relief, including lifting the arms embargo five years after the deal's adoption.

In 2018, the US pulled out of the JCPOA and reinstated harsh sanctions on Tehran.

The US has continued its sanction regime in the framework of "Maximum Pressure" right now.
