Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Sistani, the prominent Marja of Shiites in Iraq, described the desecration of the Holy Quran in Sweden as insulting"and emphasized that freedom of speech in no way justifies violation of sanctity of Quran and promotion of extremism

Iran PressMiddle East: The Office of Iraq's supreme religious authority, Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, sent a letter to United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres addressing the recent incident of desecrating a copy of the Quran in Sweden.

The text of the letter from the office of the Supreme Religious Authority of Shia Muslims states that respect for freedom of expression does not justify issuing a license for such a shameful act.

Expressing condemnation and denunciation of the incident, Iraq's supreme religious authority called upon the United Nations to take adequate measures to prevent the recurrence of similar acts. It also urged countries to reconsider their legislation allowing such incidents to occur.

While condemning this action, the Supreme Religious Authority urges the United Nations to take effective measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents and to force countries to review the laws that allow such actions to occur.

The Supreme Religious Authority also calls for establishing the values of peaceful coexistence between followers of different religions and intellectual approaches based on respect for rights and mutual respect among all.

Also, Iran's Foreign Minister on Thursday strongly condemned the desecration of the holy Quran stating that allowing insults to religious sanctities and the Holy Quran is unacceptable by Sweden under any justification.

In a Twitter post, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, Iran's top diplomat said the entire Islamic world "strongly condemns the insult to the holy books and the Holy Quran."
