Iran Press/Africa: The Libyan Foreign Ministry sent a letter to the UN Security Council saying Khalifa Haftar planned and launched an offensive on Tripoli, violating international humanitarian law by attacks on civilians, including those on Intisar and Abu Salim neighborhoods as well as the recent one on Fernaj neighborhood that killed three children and injured seven civilians.
The letter, submitted to Security Council's president, said Haftar's forces are carrying daily airstrikes on residential areas, which makes his listing for the sanctions applicable as per the Security Council resolutions, the Libya Observer reported.
The letter also says Haftar's forces also carried out attacks on Mitiga and Misrata airports as well as a number of state institutions under the authority of the internationally recognized Government of National Accord.
Three girls were killed, while their mother and sister were injured in an airstrike by Haftar's warplanes on a civilian house in Fernaj neighborhood in Tripoli.
The UN Support Mission in Libya condemned the airstrike on the Ferjan neighborhood that was carried out by "the LNA," referring to Haftar's forces.
The Haftar-led LAN, supported for years by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, UAE, and a number of Western countries, controls eastern Libya and has in recent months advanced toward the northern part of the country.
On 4 April 2018, Haftar launched a military campaign to occupy Tripoli and oust the Libyan government. Haftar’s attack coincided with UN plans to hold a national dialogue conference in Libya, which was undermined by Haftar’s campaign.
Libya has been engaged in civil war since 2011, when former dictator, Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown.
