Haftar forces target Mitiga airport in Tripoli, Libya

Airstrikes by Khalifa Haftar's Air Force targeted Mitiga airport in Tripoli, Libya's capital on Thursday.

Iran Press/Africa: Mitiga airport shut down air traffic and suspended flights for over 10 hours and then resumed flights in the evening, the Libya Observer reported.

Haftar's forces have attacked Mitiga airport more than 16 times since the start of Haftar's military campaign against Tripoli last April.

Recently, clashes between Khalifa Haftar forces and Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya have peaked in south and east of Tripoli.

The Libyan National Army is led by Khalifa Haftar and supported by Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, and some Western countries. Haftar's forces have advanced north over the past few months.

On April 4, 2008, Khalifa Haftar declared his intent to take over the capital, Tripoli, which has been condemned by the international community.

Since the attack began, more than 1,000 people have been killed in Tripoli and at least 5,500 injured.

After the overthrown of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, Libya has been politically unstable, with the intervention of United States and some European countries.

During the last 4 years, due to the disagreements between parties and groups, Libya has had two parliaments (Tobruk parliament in the east and the Tripoli Parliament in the capital of Libya), and two armies.

The Tobruk parliament, supported by the Libyan National Army, is led by Khalifa Haftar; and the internationally-supported Government of National Accord (GNA) of Libya is led by Fayez al-Sarraj. 203/211/218
